I have a FO to show off today. Last year I bought the book "The Prayer Shawl Ministry: Reaching Those in Need (Leisure Arts #4225)". It has a wonderful premise. You make a shawl to give to someone in need. You pray and think positive thoughts for the person who you wish to receive it. You can learn more from the website http://www.shawlministry.com/. They have several prayers on their website that you can use or you can make your own. Even if it isn't a prayer, just good thoughts to give someone who needs comfort will do. There is no domination or specific religion involved, just a wish to help others. I choose Lion Brand Homespun in yellow to make the shawl. I had about a skein and a half left over from another project that I had used. I made my own pattern but the book itself has many nice patterns to try. My pattern was a variation on the Grandmother's Dishcloth, designer unknown; it's a very simple garter stitch triangular shawl. Here is my pattern.
Cast on 1 stitch
Row 1: Knit into the front and into the back of the stitch so that you end up with 2 stitches.
Row 2: knit 1, YO, Knit 1 (3 stitches)
Row 3: Knit 1, YO, Knit 1, YO, Knit 1 (5 stitches)
Row 4: Knit 1, YO, Knit till 1 stitch is left on the needle, YO, Knit 1
Repeat Row 4 until you have the shawl the size you want it to be. Every row you'll be adding two extra stitches. You will also be making a nice lace hole on either side of the garter stitch fabric. This makes for a very easy project to make without paying attention to a pattern. It is also good for using up leftover yarn as you don't have a set size for the shawl.
I'm still trying to decide who I'm going to be giving this to. There are two people that I know that could benefit from a prayer shawl. I will be making one for each person it is just a matter of who to give to first.
